The AlShaab University Department of Legal Affairs held an open dialogue and seminar entitled The Spread of Illegal Drugs, and the Psychological and Material Repercussions on Members of Society on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 11:00 am. Prof. Dr. Khamis Abdullah Ali, Assistant to the President for Administrative Affairs, and a number of faculty and university students attended the symposium, which was held in the University conference hall.
The University hosted Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abd al-Ilah, Commander of the Administrative Unit at the Defense University for Military Studies, and Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Mohsen, legal advisor on human rights and the Order of the Court of Arrest at the Defense University for Military Studies. Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Mohsen stressed that terrorism and drugs are two sides of the same coin, as both of them pose a threat to the country and its social segments. He pointed out that there are psychological, economic, social and political factors that drive individuals to drug abuse and addiction. He noted that laws regarding the subject of drugs differ according to the nature of the criminal act, whether it is possession, abuse or trade. Regional agreements with neighboring countries work to prevent cross-border drug trafficking, but there is a need for policies to address internal drug use which monitor individuals, particularly youth, and for educational campaigns to spread awareness of the dangerous repercussions drug use can have on people’s lives. The dialogue between audience members and speakers enriched the conversation.
Appreciation certificates were distributed to the speakers.
