Seeking to highlight the role and status of women in society, and to increase political and social awareness of their rights and key issues, AlShaab University's Women Empowerment Unit organized an awareness seminar titled "Iraqi Women and Their Role in Drafting the Iraqi Constitution 2005" on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, at the Central Library Hall of the university building. The seminar was attended by Dr. Khamees Abdullah Ali, Assistant to the University President for Administrative Affairs, along with several professors, lecturers, and university students. Before the seminar began, Dr. Abdul Jabbar Ahmed, Head of the Law Department, delivered a speech congratulating Iraqi women on their day, emphasizing the importance of their role in nation-building, as they represent projects of dedication, sacrifice, and struggle. He highlighted how women currently occupy and lead political and sovereign positions, and play crucial roles in decision-making processes. Following Dr. Ahmed's speech, the seminar commenced with a presentation by Ms. Ru'a Talib, a lecturer at the College of Law and Political Science. She discussed the prominent positions and roles assumed by Iraqi women since 2003, particularly their active participation in politics during the formation of the Transitional Governing Council and the issuance of the Temporary State Administration Law in 2004. She also elaborated on their significant role in drafting the Iraqi Constitution in 2005, as members of the Constitution Drafting Committee. Ms. Talib emphasized that the constitutional texts and legal provisions have upheld women's rights, ensuring their eligibility for candidacy, election, and holding sovereign positions and ministerial offices within the Iraqi state.
