A delegation from the Municipality of Baghdad, which included Dr. Abdel Moneim Nasser Al-Issawi, Assistant Director General of Relations and Media, and Engineer Fada Wadi Hamad, Director of the Department of Environmental Awareness, visited AlShaab University this week. The delegation met with University officials to discuss the role of the university in spreading environmental awareness and urging AlShaab University students, faculty, and staff to pay attention to this issue by organizing conferences and holding educational seminars in cooperation with the concerned departments in the Baghdad Municipality. This is part of the local government’s campaign to advance environmental issues and raise awareness of the dangers of pollution
The meeting also touched on the issue of traffic accidents and hit-and-run cases that students are exposed to, especially on roads close to universities, schools and other institutions, and the need for the concerned departments in the Municipality of Baghdad to construct pedestrian bridges to cross on these roads, especially on the highways.
To prevent the recurrence of such incidents, the President of the University, Dr. Youssef, submitted a proposal to construct a pedestrian crossing bridge on one of the highways near AlShaab University at the university’s expense, after obtaining official approvals from the Municipality of Baghdad, in order to ensure the safety of students and all pedestrians who cross this road
The delegation also discussed promoting tap water use. They urge citizens to avoid bottled water as it is an added expense for citizens, and the factories in which water is bottled aren’t subject to water quality standards. Furthermore, the Iraqi government has invested large amounts of money to provide safe and affordable tap water to its citizens.
During the visit, an invitation was extended to AlShaab University by the Municipality of Baghdad to visit the cultural house of the great poet Muhammad Mahdi Al-Jawahiri and to participate in the cultural event that this house will hold during the coming week.
