AlShaab University Holds Symposium on Cybercrime

On Monday, May 15, AlShaab University’s College of Law held a symposium on the dangers of cybercrime and its effects on society. The University hosted two subject matter experts, Colonel Omar Afkar Ibrahim, Director of the Community Police in Al-Karkh District, and lawyer Hussein Fadl Al-Tamimi, President of Al-Ghad Ajmal Organization for Human Rights, who presented at the event.

The symposium began with a lecture by Lian Hazem, College of Law faculty member. She started by defining cybercrime and differentiated it from other types of crime, noting that the development of electronic communications resulted in cybercrime and extortion operations that targeted many social groups, noting the strong correlation of cybercrime and digitization. She further explained that the international community has criminalized such acts of persons or entities seeking material gain or harming others.

In his presentation, lawyer Hussein Fadl Al-Tamimi stressed the need to utilize legal institutions and the courts in cases of threats or extortion by filing a report with the appropriate authorities. He explained that some societal customs and traditions may stand in the way of the implementation of the law that was established to organize and protect people’s lives and preserve their rights.

In Colonel Omar Ibrahim’s presentation, he summarized the work of the community police regarding cybercrime and extortion operations.

He noted the importance of holding seminars and specialized workshops to raise awareness of the dangers of these crimes and extortion operations to which members of society are exposed. He emphasized the importance of filing lawsuits against criminals, as well as finding appropriate solutions to deal with cases of extortion in a friendly and confidential manner.He highlighted the need to cooperate and work with specialized agencies in cases of extortion, and provided the phone numbers for Ministry of Interior hotlines where such cases may be reported.

The symposium also included a Q & A session for attendees, which enriched their understanding of the symposium’s topic.
